Summer Camp 2013

Last Updated 30 August 2013 by Phil Harding (Scout Leader)

This year we took the Scouts to Torbay Scout Campsite in Devon.  After a very long drive we arrived on site, and with views like this I think the journey was worth it!!

Over the first weekend we set up camp, learnt how to safely use the axes and saws and explored our surroundings.  On Monday morning we sent the Scouts underground through the on site pipe caves and in the afternoon we all set off to Brixham to go kayaking in the harbour, including a bit of kayaking through the surf and some silly games where most of us got wet!!  The Leaders all joined in the silliness on Monday so no photos I’m afraid.

On Tuesday we went for a hike on Dartmoor with amazing views.  Our Young Leader Matt has already written a brilliant piece on this hike, make sure you read it to find out more.

On Wednesday we had hoped to go to the beach, but the weather had other ideas, so instead we went to the indoor wave pool at Torquay followed by amazing fish and chips down by the harbour.

On Thursday morning we took the Scouts down to Teignmouth for some fun in the skate park (and a few cheeky doughnuts…)

After lunch we then headed back to Dartmoor for an afternoon of rock climbing on the natural granite rock at Leigh Tor.  For most this was the first time climbing on natural rock and a very special experience, something we can’t easily do in Hampshire!!

In the evening after a quick check of our funds we decided to offer the Scouts a surprise treat of going to the funfair.  After a magical mystery tour of Torquay courtesy of my satnav…  We arrived at the fair for a couple of hours of fun on the rides.

Friday morning required a bit of an early start to get to Kents Caverns before all the other tourists arrived so we could have our own personal tour of the caves.  We learnt a lot about the rocks, animals and even found a relative of one of our leaders…

Friday is always a sad day on camp as it’s time to pack up and get ready to go home.  This year Friday was a bit special though as Matt decided to share his 16th birthday with us, thanks to Kate and Dylan for making an amazing cake!!

So, another camp comes to an end.  But what a fantastic camp and thanks to Ray I’ve never eaten so well on camp before.  Scouts, you should all be very proud of yourselves, you represented the group brilliantly and set a great example.  I look forward to the next camp, and especially to H0014 next August.
